Blessings to you as we approach the end of the 2023-24 school year. It is hard to believe we are already celebrating year-end milestones and preparing for the school year ahead. In the midst of the often busy pace of the school year, we cannot help but pause and take in the good that surrounds us and send up prayers of gratitude for His many blessings—including you and your family. We are honored and humbled by the trust you place in us each year when you choose Trinity Catholic Schools as your partner in education.
Each year, I marvel at the many and good works happening in our schools that demonstrate our collective commitment to awakening greatness in our students. This effort begins at home with you and is further cultivated and championed by our dedicated teachers and staff who strive to deliver on our promise every day—to educate the whole student…mind, body and soul. Even as the cost of education continues to rise and we are all faced with the realities of historic inflation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to our mission and offering high-quality Catholic education with tuition that is affordable for our families. In fact, we remain the most affordable Catholic school system in our Diocese and of the most affordable nonprofit, nonpublic school systems in the state.
A best practice in calculating tuition rates is to set tuition at 60% of the cost to educate. According to the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, the average cost to educate per K-12 student is currently over $14,000/student and climbing. Despite these norms, we have managed to keep both the tuition percentage and cost to educate below these marks; while at the same time, we are pleased to share that in the budget for the upcoming school year, we have increased both faculty and staff compensation. Critical to our ability to do this is the continued support and generosity of our local parishes, Dickinson Charities, Trinity Booster organizations, endowments, the fundraising efforts of our Office of Mission Advancement, and importantly, increased enrollment. This combination of direct support and philanthropic giving helps us to keep tuition just below 60% of the cost to educate--meaning EVERY family receives financial assistance by way of parish subsidy and philanthropic support. In addition, we will continue working to help our families by championing for school choice legislation at the state level. While the historic passage of HB 1532 during the last legislative session ended with a Governor’s veto, we remain optimistic that meaningful tuition support for nonpublic school students through school choice legislation is possible in North Dakota.
Each year, the budgeting process presents unique challenges and we are blessed by the work of our Business Manager, Tina Johnson, as well as the members of the Business Operations Committees, Bishop Kagan, and the TCS Board and Administration, in navigating budget challenges and producing a balanced budget for our schools. Please review the following page that includes helpful information about the budget, cost of education, and tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year. We continue to offer financial assistance for those experiencing hardship or need through our Financial Aid Program. The window to apply for the first round of assistance closes on May 31. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or our Business Manager, Tina Johnson at [email protected] or 701-483-6081.
Thank you for your commitment to Catholic education, for your friendship, and for entrusting us with your children. Please know of our prayers for you and your family as we approach the end of the school year and prepare for a blessed summer break. Sincerely yours in Christ, Marya J. Skaare, President
